Naturalization

The path to U.S. citizenship for lawful permanent residents

There are a few ways to become a United States citizen if you weren't born in the U.S., and naturalization is one of them. You must meet certain requirements if you want to become a citizen through this naturalization and citizenship process.

One of the most important requirements is the ability to prove you have been a lawful permanent resident in the U.S. for three to five years, having been physically present in this country during that time as a green card holder.

The first step toward citizenship is fulfilling all of the basic requirements. These include:

  • You are at least 18 years old, except in cases where you were adopted by a U.S. citizen
  • You can read, write, and speak English
  • You have been living lawfully in the U.S. for a minimum of five years
  • You can demonstrate your knowledge of U.S. history and the government
  • You hold a favorable opinion of the U.S.
  • You have good moral character

If you meet all of these qualifications, then you will probably be able to become an American citizen. However, the process still may be a difficult one. Most people find the effort worthwhile because of the advantages of citizenship. Here are a few of the advantages to consider:

  • Travel freely within the U.S.
  • Travel to other countries without limitation on a U.S. passport
  • Sponsor foreign relatives to immigrate to the U.S.
  • Enjoy enhanced job opportunities
  • Vote in local, state, and federal elections
  • Serve on a jury

Having an attorney is not mandatory to the naturalization process. Nonetheless, there are distinct advantages to working with an experienced immigration lawyer. You can only benefit from having the advice of someone who knows the process because they have helped dozens of other people obtain citizenship. You'll avoid many of the most common problems, and you will feel far less stress when you know you are receiving reliable advice and guidance.
